Might it be a good idea to use one-way glass in a greenhouse?

Question by Syrocko: Might it be a good idea to use one-way glass in a greenhouse?
It occurred to me that if light was allowed through from the outside, but the inside surface was a mirror, then this might result in an abundance of light. Getting even more carried away, I wonder if theoretically you could have one-way glass on every wall and a mirrored or reflective surface on the floor. Could this create a super-greenhouse that could grow tropical plants in a temperate climate? Or is there a reason why this wouldn’t work?

Answer by FlowersYes
It would also reflect all the heat. Greenhouses have a vent system to keep temperatures reasonable. It’s not that they need more light, they need protection from too much heat. Some green houses paint the foundation black inside to absorb more heat for the cold nights.

Good ideas for a garden wedding?

Question by monicanena: Good ideas for a garden wedding?
I want a spring wedding set in a formal greenhouse with white linens, wooden tables and chairs, natural grass centerpieces and a string quartet. What else can I add?
I already have the location – it’s a formal indoor greenhouse.

Depending on where you live, I would look into various botanical gardens – Milwaukee WI has a great one – as does Chicago, Richmond VA has 2 great wedding spots (Maymont Park and Louis Ginter) to rent. The University of IL in Champaign has wonderful gardens/greenhouses etc.

Call their events/public relations directors

Also, get a contingency plan for “April showers”

Q&A: I need a good web site on building a cheap greenhouse.?

Question by Bonnie J: I need a good web site on building a cheap greenhouse.?
It has to be an actual greenhouse you can walk into, not a cold frame. Using recycled materials is preferred.

Q&A: Any good websites for greenhouse kits?

Question by 1 Corinthians 9:26b-27: Any good websites for greenhouse kits?
I’m looking for any websites that sell mini greenhouse kits, like even kid greenhouse kits are great. Also, I was wondering if there were any websites that sold fruit seed packets like for planting lemon trees, or cherry trees. I can’t seem to find any websites. Thanks.
Good website, but I mean like the 1 by 1 ft. greenhouse that you can place on a windowsill.

I have a greenhouse we bought at harbor freight and it works great and for the size was cheap, only $ 500. Something you might want to consider is heating for the winter and ventilation in the summer. One must is building it sturdy and take into consideration the direction most of the wind comes from where you’ll build. Most wind here comes from the north and I was forced, due to the layout of our yard to put the door on the north, but it’s usually ok as long as the doors remain shut when the wind kicks up.
I built to floor for ours like a wood deck about a foot off the ground then anchored it to that deck. If you go that route make sure you use treated lumber and paint it more with a good preventative stain or other substance like Thomson’s water seal and leave spacing between the boards for drainage. That will also keep your base from rotting out over time. I built ours on top of concrete blocks so nothing but the concrete touches the ground except the steps I used at the door.
On ours there are four vents in the roof that open. I’m not to wild about those because they’re hard to reach and to much rain can get in when I don’t want it in. I would much rather see windows that can open and shut more easily with screens, but people in hell want ice water too, eh? You might want to install a small fan near the openings for ventilation. One other thing we have in there is a free standing steel structure that we can hang plants all the way around the edges..
In short, make sure that your structure is strong and that none or the panels or plastic you might use will come loose in the wind. If you live near a harbor freight store you might want to see what they offer. It’s cheap, easy to assemble and rather strong and above all, long lasting.
Ours in a permanent structure and not intended to be taken down in the summer months.
Good luck with it.

My window sill chilli plants are turning to face the sun: is it a good idea to turn them back around?

lean to greenhouse
by SS&SS

Question by DS: My window sill chilli plants are turning to face the sun: is it a good idea to turn them back around?
(Complete beginner)

Ideally I realise they would be in a conservatory or greenhouse. As they are just on the window sill, is it best to let them lean into the sun, or would turning them around to make them stand up straight be a good idea?

Turning plants to keep growth even is almost always a good idea…but if your plants are “reaching” toward the sun/light…they aren’t getting enough. How about just sitting them out in full sun on the porch a few hours a day? Make sure they’re well watered….and do it gradually so they don’t sunburn at first…but peppers are really full sun plants. I’m sure it’s probably too cold to have them out at night…but in most places, there are at least a few hours in the afternoon that are warm enough.

You can also put a “grow light” aimed at them from the other direction…either hanging or standing on the counter. They have “sunlight lamps” even at Walmart…for like $ 25. …not way expensive.

Good for you , being a novice and starting to grow some interesting plants. Hope they are “food peppers’ and not just ornamental…that you can’t eat. Some of the Ornamentals are annuals and are going to die in a season regardless of what you do for them.

Get good quality plastic greenhouses

If you’re thinking of buying a plastic greenhouse, then it is important for you to ensure you are getting plastic greenhouse quality. There are mainly two types of plastic greenhouses are available on the market today – polycarbonate and polyethylene caps. Each has its pros and cons, and quality vary greatly between the two types of materials. Here we will discuss how to make a good choice with plastic greenhouses and how you can make a decision very well with your purchasing decision.

Polycarbonate is a type of engineering plastic, unlike glass or acrylic is virtually unbreakable. Polycarbonate is usually used in bulletproof windows, compact discs, and lenses. It is extremely light around a sixth of the weight of the glass. The main disadvantage is that polycarbonate is more expensive than glass or acrylic. polycarbonate panels are most often used in the construction of greenhouses, as can be made very clear that they look like glass, but with much less weight and more durability. Unlike glass, no need to take care about polycarbonate scratches, cracks or breaks. This is the reason why they are widely used for the construction of plastic greenhouses.

Polyethylene covers are the second option used for the construction of plastic greenhouses. Greenhouses with flexible covers that stretch over a frame can be permanent outdoor units that are attached to the temporary use of land or units designed to be set up and taken down as needed. This accommodation has to establish nurseries for a specific part of a year which is very beneficial.

The most important factor to consider when looking at greenhouse polyethylene cover is UV stability of the material. By their nature, polyethylene is highly reactive to ultraviolet light. This means that an untreated polyethylene sheet left in the sun quickly decompose, possibly completely collapse within months.
